We are just starting to make the plans for this 10 day expedition to explore the Owyhee Canyon and wilderness.
About the Area
The Owyhee Canyonlands in southeastern Oregon is one of the most remote and spectacular high desert landscapes in the American West. Often called "The Grand Canyon of Oregon," this vast wilderness offers dramatic red rock formations, deep canyons, and rolling sagebrush hills.
Highlights
- Leslie Gulch: Known as "Mars on Earth," this area features towering, honeycombed rhyolite rock formations, hoodoos, and steep cliffs. It's home to the largest herd of California bighorn sheep in the country.
- Succor Creek State Natural Area: A rugged, rock-rimmed canyon that serves as a green oasis in the high desert. It is famous for its thundereggs (geodes) and impressive geological features.
- Remote Exploration: This expedition will take us deep into the backcountry, where solitude and starry skies are guaranteed.
What to Expect
This is a true overland expedition. We will be traveling on unmaintained dirt roads that can be challenging, especially if wet.
- Terrain: Gravel, dirt, rocky sections, and potentially washboard roads.
- Camping: We will be dispersed camping in remote locations with no facilities.
- Preparation: Vehicles must be in excellent mechanical condition. High clearance and 4WD are recommended. You need to be self-sufficient with fuel, water, and food for multiple days.
